What is myofascial pain and trigger points?

Pain and symptoms caused by muscle (myo) or fascia is described as myofascial pain. Myofascial pain is from abnormal muscle contraction or trigger points in muscles and fascia.
Myofascial pain will vary in intensity and is often described as a deep ache, tightness or tenderness in an area. Other symptoms can include reduced range of motion to muscles and joint, stiffness, fatigue, weakness, numbness or a tingling sensation. Depending on the condition and the patients they can suffer from one or many symptoms. The trigger points can be caused by many factors such as poor posture (sitting, standing, walking, exercising, working postures and sleeping), overuse of muscles, imbalances in muscles, stress, incorrect lifting and ergonomics.

What will happen in my intial consultation?

  • Firstly you will fill out a patient history form so that we will know all the relevant information about you.
  • Then an assessment will be done, firstly with your posture and then with you performing range of movement exercises on the area which is causing you your pain, to find out your restrictions.
  • Palpatation of the muscles will be done to identify which muscles are giving you pain and to identify which treatment techniques will be used to give you the best results.

Treatment tequniques will then be performed which may include:

• Deep tissue manipulations
• Myofascial release
• Trigger point therapy

• Myofascial Dry Needling
• Cupping
• Passive and active muscle stretching

As every patient is different, treatment techniques will be tailored to the patient's needs.

After your treatment a quick re-assessment will be done to show you a decrease in pain and in increase in your range of movement. Your Myotherapist will then give you an extensive amount of advice to help you. This will include postural cues, things to avoid which will be aggravating your condition and also corrective home exercises to help you quickly rehabilitate your muscles.
