MLD is a specialised form of massage that encourages the natural movement of lymph fluid through the body. Unlike deep tissue or remedial massage, this technique uses light, rhythmic strokes to enhance lymph circulation, helping to remove toxins, reduce fluid retention, and support the immune system.
MLD offers a range of benefits and helpful for individuals experiencing:
-
Lymphoedema (Grade 1): due to a compromised lymphatic system, it can encourage fluid movement by “clearing” or “redirecting” the lymph fluid preventing further complications and resulting in reduced swelling, improved tissue health and quality of life.
-
Post Acute & Traumatic Sports Injuries: reduces oedema, helps alleviate pain and discomfort associated with an injury, and help remove waste and metabolic by-products that may accumulate during the inflammatory process.
-
Digestive Issues (Chronic constipation, IBS): may help encourage proper gut motility, relieve issues like constipation or slow digestion, and promote detoxification which can assist the digestive system if overwhelmed by toxins.
-
Fibromyalgia: Provides relief from pain and stiffness, improving overall comfort. The relaxation benefits may indirectly help cognitive function, sleep, and manage flare-ups.
-
Pre/Post Surgery Conditions: improves lymph flow, preps the immune system before surgery, prevents lymph stagnation & congestion, trauma zone, and assists with scar healing.
-
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: impacts the nervous system which can help lower stress, improve better sleep patterns, promote relaxation, and reduce inflammation.
Key benefits include:
-
Reduces Swelling & Fluid Retention – Ideal for post-surgery recovery, injury rehabilitation, or anyone experiencing digestive issues and/or fluid retention.
-
Supports Pre & Post-Surgical & Injury Recovery – Preps the body for surgery, Reduces swelling, bruising, and inflammation, speeding up healing and recovery.
-
Promotes Relaxation & Stress Relief – The light, slow rhythmic movements deeply impact the nervous system leaving you relaxed and rejuvenated.
-
Boosts the Immune System – Enhances lymphatic flow, assisting the body to filter out toxins and fight off illness/infections more effectively.
-
Improves Skin Health – Helps with conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and puffiness by promoting detoxification and reducing inflammation.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
This treatment involves very light, slow techniques to activate and encourage the flow of lymph in the body within your lymphatic system. The reason for this is due to our own lymphatic system moving very slowly within our bodies (the lymph vessels only contract 8-12 times per minute), so the technique needs to mimic this.
How does MLD differ from traditional massage?
Unlike regular massage, MLD is targeted for your lymphatic system only, which involves light, slow and specific techniques with minimal pressure. The treatment is pain free!
How long should I book for?
This will depend on the client and their concerns. For first time clients, it is preferred NO longer than a 60 min treatment to experience the reactions/post treatment effects first. For a full body treatment, 90 min is recommended. Your therapist can advise on this for you.
What is your lymphatic system?
It is a network of vessels, tissues and organs that help protect and maintain the body’s fluid balance. It plays an important role in supporting the body’s ability to fight off infections and disease. The lymph system plays a crucial role in our bodies acting like the ambulance service, construction company and professional cleaners whenever in need, we cannot live without it.
What are some general reactions/healing signs post treatment?
Deep relaxation, high elimination and/or change in colour of urine/stool, headaches and/or nausea, reduced swelling/fluid retention, amongst many others.
How often do I need to come in?
This will depend on the client’s needs. For general wellness, once a month is recommended. For acute injuries, pre/post operations, or severe cases (such as Lymphoedema) more frequent treatments may be required. Again, your therapist can guide you and make suggestions based on your concerns and/or goals.
