Heading away this summer? Whether you’re flying interstate to see family, road-tripping down the Great Ocean Road, or jetting off overseas, travel can take a surprising toll on your body.
Long hours of sitting, whether it’s in a car or plane, can lead to tight hips, sore backs, stiff necks, and aching legs. Our therapists see it every year, clients returning from holidays feeling like they need a holiday from their holiday!
Here are some simple tips to keep your body comfortable and pain-free while you travel this summer.
Stretch Before You Sit:
Think of travel like a mini workout for your body, it’s a physical challenge, just in a different way. Preparing your muscles beforehand can make all the difference.
Before you get into the car or board the plane:
• Do some gentle hip flexor stretches to counteract sitting.
• Loosen your neck and shoulders with slow rolls.
• Add in a few spinal twists to wake up your lower back.
It takes just five minutes and can help your body settle more comfortably once you’re seated.
Take Movement Breaks:
It’s easy to underestimate how long you’ve been sitting when you’re watching a movie or cruising down the highway. But your muscles and joints need regular movement to stay happy.
• Flying? Stand up and stretch every hour or two. March on the spot while you wait for the bathroom.
• Driving? Plan a quick stop every 90 minutes — get out, walk around, do some star jumps.
• Sitting for long stretches? Do some seated calf raises, squeeze and release your glutes, shrug your shoulders, and shift positions regularly.
Even small movements such as opening and closing your hands or wiggling your toes can increase circulation and reduce stiffness.
